Performance testing of a detergent is typically done on a cotton swatch or other textile sample, which is stained with any number of substances from grass to coffee and tea, put through a wash cycle, and then measured to determine the cleaning power of the detergent.  The preferred measurement technique for this application is to use a directional reflectance instrument, preferably diffuse d/8 ° geometry, which allows both specular included and specular excluded measurements.
